Facebook Creates Virtual Reality Team
We’re hearing more and more about companies taking initiative in regards to virtual reality. That’s happening with Facebook too. Facebook announced that they’re promoting their 360-degree video technology onto the Gear VR.
Facebook’s new VR team will be responsible for researching what they call social VR to see how people connect with each other using VR technology.
As of now, Facebook has mainly worked with Oculus (virtual reality hardware startup acquired in 2014). This new Facebook team could mean that Facebook will eventually just push through the market on their own.
The Facebook VR team is lead by Danie James (co-founder of Puzzle Pirates and Spiral Knights studio Three Rings Design) and Mike Booth (helped develop Valve’s zombie shooter Left 4 Dead).
Mark Zuckerberg (CEO of Facebook) has consistently spoken about the opportunities in the virtual reality market. Mark even said immersive media is the “obvious next thing after video.”
Who knows where this will lead Facebook, but it’s safe to say that we shouldn’t be surprised if we see a lot more VR announcements from Facebook in 2016 and beyond.
