Facebook Will Learn From Nintendo’s Huge 1990s Virtual Reality Failure
Consumers started receiving the first Oculus headsets that were shipped by Facebook on March 28th. It had a hard task of convincing the US consumers to buy it: A categorical failure was seen about 21 years ago when a multinational industry introduced the first virtual reality gaming.
In the 1990s, Nintendo failed miserably to deliver what it promised consumers about their new virtual reality gaming. There were less than 800,000 of the vomit- inducing gadgets that were shipped before they were finally pulled off the market, according to a report, but Nintendo was not available to confirm these claims. According to them, Super Nintendo and Nintendo 64 were received much better in the market. Nintendo was a common name back then as Facebook is right now. The company was more specialized in video games, but actors appeared in films and comics and on every piece of a clothing line. After re- establishing the video game market with the entertainment system in 1985, Nintendo followed up with their amazing jams; Super Nintendo and the Game Boy. Many believed that this step was used to transform the gaming company into a new brand. They marketed their new 3 Dimensional gaming systems aimed at the young generation.
The Virtual Boy failed to impress. The problem with it was that it was not portable even though it could be shared. One needed some furniture to place it on since it had a stand. However, it sat at an awkward height that wasn’t adjustable. Also, the games were not in true virtual reality, more so red lines that people were looking at through a viewfinder. And because of this, users usually ended up having headaches and motion sickness. Its founders once joked that the Virtual Boy project made them sick a year after it was released. It was sold at 30 dollars and the games went for 10 dollars.
Oculus founder Palmer Luckey said that he never saw the Virtual Boy as being a real VR gadget and it may have created a negative public approach to Virtual Reality. Many asked if 2016 might end up looking like 1995. This can be possible if you are viewing the film known as Dope. The 1990s console Nintendo VR is completely different from today’s HTC’ Vive, Oculus’s Rift and Sony’s PlayStation VR.
For the last 2 decades, the virtual reality industry has seen a huge improvement and the VR content available now is fun, impressive and more immersive. However, there is still a barrier to its entry point. VR headsets cost 500 dollars and their systems require a consumer to part with up to a thousand dollars or more.
Facebook and other manufacturers need to show consumers that they are providing something that is worthy of a customer’s money even though the Oculus Rift had received a positive review from many people. It’s also hard to sell when a person hasn’t put on the headset and experienced VR for themselves.
Facebook’s CEO, Mark Zuckerberg said that they will be involved in this project for a long time. He also stated that people will be coming to VR because of its social connections even when games hold their attention for a couple of months. The new VR feels more real and engages people fully, an experience that Virtual Boy’s red lines never produced.
