Immersive Technology Alliance Hires Expert to Lead Group Tasked to Provide Safe VR Guidelines

The Immersive Technology Alliance (ITA) has procured the services of Dr. Michael Madary who happens to be one of the leading experts on virtual reality (VR) ethics to head a new working group that is tasked on safe practices and responsible users aiming for VR content and products.

Michael Madary and His Thoughts on VR Ethics

Dr. Madary has a lot to say about the growing industry that is virtual reality. Speaking about his collaboration with ITA, the VR expert shared his thoughts on the ethics of virtual reality.

He said, “Immersive technology holds great promise for new forms of education, social interaction, medical treatment, and artistic expression. My own work, in collaboration with the ITA, is about enabling the well-being of end users and the positive outcome of technologies such as virtual reality and augmented reality. We are all still learning what this powerful media is capable of, and the alliance provides a valuable opportunity for technology and content makers to build the required tool sets for safe and viable experiences.”

Immersive Technology Alliance

Dr. Michael Madary deals with the ethics of emerging technology and is focused more on immersive technology such as virtual reality. His research cuts across many fields, and he draws form philosophy of mind, psychology, and neuroscience. In February 2016, working together with Thomas Metzinger, Madary published the first code of ethics for research and consumption of VR, which went on to get a lot of media attention.

Ever since, he has published a lot in the philosophy of perception, including a book called Visual Phenomenology, which is currently in production with MIT press.



“It’s in everyone’s interest to understand their work so responsible consumer targeting and well-being is ensured.  This open conversation is necessary for product viability and all market leaders should be present,” said Neil Schneider, ITA’s executive director.

The Immersive Technology Alliance and ITA VR Council is made up of several member companies in the industry and includes members that are known VR front-runners, such as Advanced Micro Devices, Crytek, Starbreeze Studios, ImmerVision, Immersion-VRelia, Basemark, Futuremark, Droiders, VRVana, FOVE, and a host of others.

It is free to sign up as a basic member and qualified content creators. Special arrangements are made available for qualified startup companies.

The alliance accounts for the viability, advancement, and adoption of virtual reality and other related technologies like augmented reality, mixed reality, stereoscopic 3D, and related innovations for the future.
