Ninja Theory has been known for their expressive and visually-striking games like Heavenly Sword, DmC: Devil May Cry, and many others. The Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice appears to feature the exact levels of drama and action that we have come to hope for in a new trailer that provides a new angle (literally) on the experience.
Ninja Theory exhibited a virtual human demonstration in partnership with Epic Games, Cubic Motion & 3Lateral at Game Developer Conference 16. In a world-first, a scene from their upcoming game, Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice was staged by an actress Melina Jeurgens live and made in the game world in real-time. The studio have today made public the same scene in VR.
“We tested the scene in VR and found that people reacted very strongly to seeing someone they perceive as human”, said Tameem Antoniades, Chief Creative Ninja at Ninja Theory.
“Our belief is that real-time virtual human technology will profoundly shape future VR experiences for games, movies and beyond.”
Will Driver, CTO at Ninja Theory added, “In VR, you expect characters to acknowledge your presence in meaningful and natural ways and respond to your actions. In the real-time version of the scene, Senua tracks and follows your eyes procedurally while still playing a captured performance. In future, we believe a mix of live performance capture, procedural animation systems and Al will profoundly change the way we both create and enjoy VR experiences.”
Ninja Theory intend to go on with their work with Virtual Human Technology in partnership with Cubic Motion and 3Lateral to check out the prospects that real-time performance capture and virtual human interaction will bring to virtual reality encounters.
The new trailer for the Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice was released by Sony displaying a scene from Ninja Theory latest title, with the trailer also utilizing 360-degree motion to allow viewer to control the camera and see all the drama, tragedy and more from a whole new perspective.
The Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice 360° video can be viewed on YouTube here: https://youtu.be/Kz2xpeGkcRU
The 360° video can also be seen in virtual reality with the Google Cardboard viewer through the YouTube Mobile Application and with Oculus devices.
Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice itself is not a virtual reality video game, however, Ninja Theory has shown a great interest in the medium.
